The Department of English Language and Literature at the University of Michigan seeks applicants for Intermittent Lecturer positions for the New England Literature Program (NELP) in New Hampshire during the spring half-term of 2025 (exact dates below). These non-tenure track positions constitute 100% effort each and are to be appointed for one term only with the possibility of reappointment for future Spring half-terms. Terms and conditions of employment for this position are subject to the provisions of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the University of Michigan and the Lecturers Employment Organization (LEO).

This position requires instructors to work closely together to plan and collaboratively teach a curriculum based on the literature, history, and culture of primarily 19 th and 20 th century New England. Much of that teaching takes place in non-traditional class spaces on mountains, in the woods, in the rain, in the camp kitchen, and as a result takes on forms that differ from those usually encountered in more traditional classroom settings. This position also involves the teaching of creative writing, both in formal, workshop-style classes and in alternative writing groups that meet in a variety of settings. Instructors must feel comfortable leading small groups of students on multi-day hiking trips into New England's rugged backcountry. Intermittent Lecturers at NELP live on-site in rustic accommodations that may or may not be furnished with heat and electricity, and they are expected to participate fully in all aspects and activities of the program, which begins on April 27, 2025, with Staff Week, a week of planning and preparations before students arrive, and ends June 24, after a week of collaborative grading. Because of the compressed nature of the program's schedule and the fact that we are a residential learning community, instructors do not get days off during the program. You can learn more about NELP by visiting  . NELP instructors will need to attend this year's curriculum-planning retreat in Michigan, February 7-9. NELP covers travel expenses to and from the Michigan retreat center, as well as food and lodging for the weekend.

The candidate must hold a B.A. in English Language and Literature or in another field with significant experience in literary studies or creative writing; candidates with a Ph.D. or M.F.A. in English are preferred. The candidate should have demonstrated excellence in the teaching of writing and literature in the United States. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in experiential and alternative education, wilderness leadership, or experience with living-learning programs. Work on ecocriticism, alternative learning communities, and pedagogy is also of particular interest.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.

The University of Michigan conducts background checks on all job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background checks.  Background checks are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

The mission of the University of Michigan is to serve the people of Michigan and the world through preeminence in creating, communicating, preserving and applying knowledge, art, and academic values, and in developing leaders and citizens who will challenge the present and enrich the future.

The University of Michigan is an equal opportunity/affirmative action employer.
