Position: Spring 2025 Academic Intern - Archaeology

Type: Unpaid Academic Internship

Schedule: Part-time, unpaid position from Monday, January 13, 2025 until Friday, March 21, 2024

Location : Archaeology Collections, Columbus, OH

Reports to: Archaeology Curator

About Ohio History Connection:

The Ohio History Connection, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, is a statewide history organization with the mission to spark discovery of Ohio's stories. Chartered in 1885, the OHC carries out history services for Ohio and its citizens focused on preserving and sharing the state's history. This includes housing the state historic preservation office, the official state archives, local history office and managing more than 50 sites and museums across Ohio.

Summary:

This internship focuses on the steps necessary to properly curate collections under the general supervision of the archaeology staff. It will provide participants an opportunity to experience various aspects of the curatorial process. Department hours are 9:00-4:30 Monday through Friday and the successful applicant would need to be able to work any time within those hours/days.

Essential Functions:
  • Develop a working inventory of the collections
  • Wash, weigh, number and catalog collections
  • Collections research
  • Identify, organize and assign object numbers to un-cataloged material
  • Data entry using Microsoft Excel
Required Competencies:
  • Applicant expected to arrange for course credit through their academic advisor. Number of hours worked per week will depend on course credit hours.
  • Some knowledge of archaeology, especially of the Ohio area, is useful.
  • Works well both independently and with and in support of colleagues to complete work.
  • Demonstrates a potential to communicate well in written and verbal communications, including informal mediums like email and meetings.
  • Desire to learn about history and share their knowledge.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Reliable and punctual.

  • Must be available to attend the virtual intern welcome day on Monday January 13, 2025
  • Must present at the virtual spring internship summit
  • Must attend professional development opportunities and meetings when requested
Education and Experience Outcomes:
  • Experience in collections handling, processing, cataloging, and housing.
  • Knowledge of museum best practices and procedures.
  • Will learn about the history of Ohio
  • Will gain an understanding of the inner workings of a non-profit museum
  • Will learn to work within a team environment
