Our client, located in Crystal City/Arlington, VA, is a leading professional association with more than 15,000 members. They are seeking a Vice President of Finance & Accounting to provide enterprise financial leadership to the organization, a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, and its subsidiaries. This position can be remote or hybrid. For well-qualified candidates outside the DC metro area, this position offers a fully remote work environment. All employees are expected to attend meetings in person as needed (up to 5%), whether at headquarters in Arlington or other locations.
Local DC metro area candidates (with residency in DC, MD, or VA and living within 75 miles of the organization’s HQ in Arlington, VA) are preferred and will enjoy a hybrid work environment of two days in the office.
P OSITION S UMMARY
Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Administration, the Vice President of Finance & Accounting ensures the financial health of the enterprise by promoting excellence in finance and accounting. This position prepares monthly financial reports, manages the organization’s investment portfolio, conducts regular financial forecasting and planning, and leads the annual budget process. The Vice President serves as a staff liaison for the Finance and Audit committees and serves on the 401(k) Committee. This position has both direct and indirect reports within the Finance & Accounting Department and serves as a member of the Advisory Team for the CEO.
R ESPONSIBILITIES
Strategic Financial Leadership (50%)
- Provide leadership as a strategic business partner to the senior leadership team and subsidiaries.
- Assess and evaluate financial performance of the organization on long-term operational goals, budgets, and forecasts.
- Provide insight and recommendations on both short-term and long-term organizational growth plans.
- Create and establish annual financial objectives that align with the organization's plan for growth and expansion.
- Communicate, engage, and interact with the SVP, CEO, and senior leadership team and attend board of directors meetings.
- Develop and implement financial strategies, policies, and procedures to optimize the organization's financial performance.
- Oversee the budgeting process, ensuring accurate and timely financial forecasting and monitoring financial performance against targets.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations, including investment opportunities, cost-benefit analyses, and financial risks, to aid in decision-making processes.
- Lead the financial planning and reporting processes, including the preparation of financial statements, profitability analysis, and financial performance reports for senior management and the board of directors.
- Implement policies, procedures, and processes and promote and model compliance.
Financial Management Analysis, Budgeting and Forecasting (35%)
- Lead the development of the organization’s annual budget and coordinate with subsidiaries accordingly.
- Develop and maintain monthly operating budget and annual operating budget.
- Develop and maintain three-year outlook and budget projections and forecasting.
- Provide and present monthly financial reports, including monthly net revenue by program, forecast vs. budget by program, and cash flow.
- Review and analyze monthly financial results and provide recommendations.
- Identify, develop, and execute analysis of business initiatives, program and product launches, and/or new service offerings.
- Oversee the creation of reports, software implementation, and tools for budgeting and forecasting.
- Oversee service finance areas and relationships to ensure quality services and efficiencies through standard operating procedures.
- Manage cash flow planning process and ensure funds availability.
- Oversee cash, investments, and asset management in accordance with the board approved investment policy.
- Explore new investment opportunities and provide recommendations on potential returns and risks.
- Maintain excellent banking relationships and strategic alliances with vendors and business partners.
- Utilize forward-looking models and activity-based analyses to provide financial insight into the organization's plans and operating budgets.
- Engage and provide management support to the Finance and Audit committees, including conducting quarterly meetings to present financial statements and discuss financial activity, position, and cash flow as well as investment performance and outlook.
- Lead the audit firm selection process; oversee external auditors, manage preparation process, and provide support to accounting staff and Audit committee.
- Develop, implement, and enforce financial/accounting policies and procedures; review and ensure application of appropriate internal controls and compliance with policy and procedures.
- Oversee the timely and accurate preparation and communication of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Oversee month-end close process, including review of general ledger accounts, balance sheet accounts, personnel time allocation, and overhead cost allocation; promote constant review of procedures and quality improvement to eliminate inefficiencies.
- Ensure timeliness and accuracy of financial and management reporting of data for grants and other external funding.
- Oversee the preparation and timely filing of all local, state, and federal tax returns.
- Partner with the SVP of Administration to develop and exercise organization disaster recovery and business continuity plans.
- Actively monitor and measure operational progress and goal achievement.
- Manage enterprise banking relationships and primary contract for bank wire transfers.
- Conduct biweekly payroll audits and provide support to the HR team as needed.
Contracts Management (10%)
- Manage the organization’s contract management process.
- Negotiate contracts on behalf of the organization and its subsidiaries, as needed.
- Work with the Legal team to ensure contracts are compliant with the organization's guidelines and are executed in a timely manner.
- Serve as the primary administrator for the organization’s contract management system and conduct regular training with users of the system.
Leadership (5%)
- Promote a culture of quality and exceptional customer service as internal service providers to the organization.
- Mentor and develop team members.
- Oversee the Finance & Accounting department to ensure proper functioning of all systems, policies, procedures, and organizational readiness.
- Actively monitor and measure operational progress and goal achievement for the Finance & Accounting team.
- Hire, develop, and manage accounting staff and resources.
- Conduct regularly scheduled meetings with the department and direct reports.
- Complete all reviews and timesheets within prescribed deadlines.

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
- CPA
- Minimum of 15 years of related experience, including experience in nonprofit organizations
- Minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience
- Advanced knowledge of contract negotiation and administration
- Advanced skill set with Sage Intacct financial accounting system
- Working knowledge and proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Outlook, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, SharePoint, Teams) and database management systems
P REFERRED E DUCATION AND/OR E XPERIENCE
- Master’s degree
- Previous business development experience with an association
- Knowledge of or experience with Bill.com, Divy.com, Fonteva, and/or FloQast
